Message from the Chair
Happy Spring! I am sure you are all excited for the coming summer. I
wish you and your families the best for a warm and fun-filled season.
Please continue reading below for updates from your Board.
A Challenging Winter and Spring Maintenance
As many of you will recognize, it has been a challenging winter with an irregular number of snow and ice events followed by thaws, which took their toll on our road. Given the extremely icy conditions this year there was more sanding required than usual to maintain the road. Work was also done to clear blind corners and create safer lines of sight for our members. One year-round resident reported that the maintenance of the road this winter was the best he’s seen in years. Given it was such a severe winter, our costs to maintain the road were approximately $30,000. Thank you to Wes Lake for doing a wonderful job plowing and sanding to keep the road open.
Spring frost heaves and heavy traffic on the road during wet conditions left the road in very bad shape. A significant amount of work has been done over the past few weeks to bring it back to reasonable condition. Severe mud ruts that had emerged have been filled with large rock and then finished with smaller aggregate. The entire road is being graded now that the frost is out of the ground in anticipation of the May long-weekend.
Ken Marshall has done a wonderful job of stepping in as temporary Road Superintendent. He and Steve Sage have done significant work to keep the road safe by unplugging culverts, clearing brush and installing new road signs. Thanks to both of you for your hard work.
Welcome Don Bartley
I am pleased to report that Don Bartley has agreed to become our new Road Superintendent. Don and his wife Helena have been permanent residents on the road for many years. Don held the position of Road Superintendent for the City of Kawartha Lakes for 20 years and is now retired. Don assumes the position of Road Superintendent immediately and has agreed to be included on the proposed slate for Board of Director positions.
Road Condition Updates
Throughout the winter, road conditions have been posted on the website every Friday to give Members a sense of what to expect before heading to their cottage for the weekend. We will continue to post updates until the May long-weekend and then resume the postings again in November.
Board’s Slate of Directors
Our AGM is held every year during the August long-weekend at the Cavendish Community Centre. This is an opportunity to learn about your road and how it has been managed. It is also an opportunity to elect new Directors to the Board. As was passed in the By-law last year, the Board will recommend a slate of new Directors to be presented to membership in advance of the AGM. Murray Kline, as Chair of the Governance Committee, is currently pulling together a list of proposed Directors that will be distributed soon. The Members will then have the opportunity to nominate further candidates in accordance with the By-Law. Please see the By-Law posted on the website under the Resources tab. Please note, Nell Geddes, our Secretary, must receive completed Member nominations by June 20, 2019 in order to be considered for election as a Director.
I wish you all a wonderful and safe summer!
Report from the Finance Committee
Thank you to everyone for submitting your 2018 Maintenance Payments so promptly. As of the April 15th Due Date, almost 90% of the payments had been received, either by e-transfer or cheque.
As was passed at last year’s AGM, this fiscal year will be a transition year, with the Year-end moving from July 31 to May 31. Hopefully, all of the fees will be received by May 31st so we will have all of our revenue in by year end.
